The Kil in this name, as in most Irish surnames beginning with Kil, was formerly Gil and MacGil, i.e. MacGiolla. In the “census” of 1659-60it appears as Gillelorin, one of the principal Irish surnames in the barony of Gorren, Co. Sligo, and that part of the country is the main habitat of the Killorans today. A few are still called Gilloran. Woulfe gives Mac giolla Luaithrinn as the Gaelic form, Luaithrinn being a saint's name.
