Of local origin from a place in Aberdeenshire. There is a Kelman Hill in the Cabrach. Kelman is a common surname in the shire, and several of the name are buried in Mortlach churchyard. William Kelman, admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1591 (NSCM., I, p. 81) is probably the merchant burgess there in 1605 (ROA., I, p. 231). Alexander Kelman was admitted burgess of Dundee in 1589 (Wedd., p. 189), and James Kelman appears in Aberdeen in the same year (CRA., p. 64). Barbara Kilmaine is recorded in Edinburgh, 1603 (Edinb. Marr.), Isobel Kelmane in Auld Aberdeen, 1621 (RSCA., II, p. 247), and James Kelman, against whom a charge was made in 1633, is probably Jams Kelmane in Belchirrie against whom there was an action for debt in 1636 (RSCA., II, p. 375,413). William Kelman appears in Balnamoon, 1747 (Moray), James Kelman was member of Gartly Company of Volunteers in 1798 and John Kelman member of the Huntly Company (Will, p. 18, 24), and James Kelman from Alvah was tailed in the first Great War (Turriff).
