It originates with Swiss immigrants from the area of Bern, Switzerland, such as Joseph "Yost" Gingrich, from the early 1700s, who immigrated to Pennsylvania and settled into Lancaster County. Gingrich is said to have come from the Swiss family Gundereich. As Mennonite farmers, many were illiterate and names were written down as the were understood phonetically in the English Colonies. Thus Gingrich became Kingrey, Gingrey, Pingrey etc. Many of the Kingrey variations migrated to Virginia and on to South Central Kentucky, Ohio, Louisiana, and Texas. Pingreys of the same lineage have been found in Georgia and Gingreys in Rhode Island and the East coast.
