From the barony of the same name in Perthshire. The first of the name in record is Radulphus Ruffus, who received a charter of the lands from William the Lion, c 1180 (Macfarlane, I, p. 52). Between 1204 and 1214 there is record of a royal confirmation of a grant by Richard of Kinnard, grandson of Radulf "Ruffus" (Laing, 3). Rauf de Kynnard swore fealty to Edward I at Kincardine in 1296. The seal attached to his homage bears a shield charged with a saltire, cantoned with four crosses, S' Radulf de Kynard (Bain, II, p. 184,214). Richard de Kyiinard of the county of Fyfe also rendered nomage in the same year (ibid., p. 214). Reginald de Kynnaid was one of the witnesses to a charter by John de Wardroperisthon, c. 1330 (SCM., V, p. 10). William de Kynard was burgess of Perth in 1428 (RMS., II, 109), another William de Kynnarde was a notary of St. Andrews diocese in 1430 (Irvine, I, p. 24), Thomas de Kynnarde, a charter witness in 1431 (HP., II, p. 169), Andrew de Kynharde, a charter witness in Dundee in 1435 (ibid., II, p. 177), Alan de Kynnarde granted a charter of the lands of Hill, 1449 (RMS., II,), and William Kynnard of that Ilk is mentioned in 1546 (SCM., IV, p. 217). Erche (i.e. Archie=Archibald) Kinjerd was a tenant of the Abbey of Kelso in 1567 (Kelso, p. 524). Kynnaird 1618, Kynnerd 1591, Keneris (pl.) 1603. Other forms are Kinard (1643), Kynarde, Kynnart.
