From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
From the lands of Kin-near near Wormit, Fife. Symon, son of Michael, gave a carucate of land of Cathelai to the church of St. Andrews. His grant was confirmed by King Malcolm IV (RPSA., p. 195), and King William confirmed the grant of Chathelach, with common pasture for twenty-four beasts, and eighty sheep, which Symon, son of Michael gave, and his son Alan confirmed (ibid., p. 212). The descendants of Symon took the name of Kinnear, and were the vassals of the Priory of St. Andrews in the lands of Kathlac, etc., which they held till the beginning of the eighteenth century (Lawrie, p. 448). Reginald de Kener witnessed gift of one mark of silver annually by Alexander, earl of Buchan to the Abbey of Arnbroath, c. 1250 (RAA., I, p. 266). Simon, son of Simon de Kyner, made a grant of part of the lands of Kathlac to the church of St. Andrew which was confirmed by Alexander II, 1216 (RPSA., p. 292,294). Sir John de Kyner rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 169), Petrus Kyrior was elected common councillor of Aberdeen, 1477 (Guildry, p. 189), John de Kynor was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1439, and Adam Kynnor in 1457 (NSCM., I, p. 5, 15). John Kynnier was retoured heir of David Kynnier de eodem, his father, 1543 (Retours, Fife, 2), and Joanne Kingzow in Brechin, 1600, appears again in 1602 as John Keingzer (REB., II, 231,232). John Kenyr, charter witness in Inverness, 1536 (Laing, 403). Henry Kinneir of Kinneir was appointed commendator of Balmerino Abbey, 1574, and John Kinneir of that Ilk was bailie of the abbey (Campbell, Balmerino and its abbey).
