From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From Conisborough in Yorkshire. Galfridus de Coningesburg witnessed a confirmation charter by Malcolm IV in favor of the Abbey of Scone, 1164 (Scon, p. 8). William de Cuniggebure or Cunigburc, who possessed the manor of Stapelgorton in the twelfth century, granted to the monks of Kelso the chapel of Stapelgortune sometime after 1153 (Kelso, 35). Sir William de Cuningburcht, knight, witnessed a charter of lands in Egilfechan c. 1249 (Annandale, I, p. 7), and Thomas de Cunyngburgh witnessed a charter by Alan hostiarius, 1261 (REA., II, p. 275). Gilbert de Coningesburghe who was outlawed in 1278 for the slaughter of Richard Bullok in the field of Cambok (Bain, IX p. 34) may be Gilbert de Cuningysburg', who witnessed an agreement in 1284 and a Renfrew charter in 1294 (RMP., p. 66, 96; OPS., I, p. 77). Sir William de Conynsburghe or Conyngesburgh of Lanarkshire rendered homage, 1296. His seal bears a rabbit, S' Willi' Konisbovrg (Bain, II, p. 203,226, 555). Duncan de Coningesburghe of the county of Dunfres, and Gilbert de Conyburke of county of Arne also rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II). William of Cunigburgh and Fynlaw Spens were appointed in 1468 to make the inquisitions or values of Bute, and William Cunnyburgh was retoured heir in certain lands there in 1554 (Retours, Bute, 1). John Cunninburc was bailie of the 'burght of Kirkintullocht,' 1563 (OPS., I, p. 505), and Isobel Cunyburch is recorded in Auchinloich, 1605 (Campsie). Katharine Cunyngbrucht had sasine of land in Bute, 1618, and in 1643 the marquis of Argyll acquired sasine of their lands in Bute from Ninian Cunningham alias Cuniburgh, elder and from John Cunningham alias Cuniburgh, younger (Sabines, I, p. 13; II, p. 239). Over 250 different spellings of the name have been noted from official sources by Mr. T. C. Kinnlburgh, of Folkestone, Kent, who is compiling a history of his family. Some of these are Ciniburgh, Cwinnigbrughe, Kinnebrew, Kennybrew, Kimbrough, and Kinnebroch (this last at the beginning of the nineteenth century).
