Kinsey Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. (1) 'of Kilnsea,' a parish in East Riding of Yorks; (a) 'of Kilnsay,' a hamlet in the parish of Burnsall, West Riding of Yorks; (3) 'of Kingsley'(l). I cannot help coming to the conclusion that Kinsey in Cheshire. and Lancashire, is a variant of Kingsley. The 'g' was lost in Kinsley, which see, and the 'l' in Kinsey. I doubt not that in the South of England most of our Kinseys are modifications of Kingsey (which see); compare Kinsman for Kingsman, or Kinsley for Kingsley.

A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

(Teutonic) 1 the Anglo-Saxon Cynesige = Royal Victory [Old English cyne-, royal + sige, victory] 2 belonging to (a) Kilnsea (Holderness), the Domesday Chilnesse [The -nesse here and in the Domesday form (Hornesse) of the contiguous Hornsea, and the -nessei of the Domesday form (Widfornessei) of Withern- sea, have been assumed to be the dative sing. case-ending of either Old English næss or Old Norse nes, a promontory. Apart from the frequent untrustworthiness of Domesday forms, the difficulty is that none of these places seems to be properly a headland (the coast-line has, however, been considerably encroached upon by the sea); and, on the whole, the second element is more likely to be either Old Norse sæ-r, or Old English sǽ, lake] (b) Kilnsay or Kilnsey (W.Yorks) [This place is on the River Wharfe, so that the second element may reasonably be assumed to be the Old English í(e)g = Old Norse ey, waterside, island; and Kilns- prob. represents the genit. of a pers. name with Old English Céol- = Old Norse Kióll- (ship) for the first theme] 3 for Kingsey, q.v.

Surnames of the United Kingdom (1912) by Henry Harrison
