From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From the town of Kintore in central Aberdeenshire. Johan de Kintowar and Wautier de Kyntowhar, both of the county of Perth, rendered homage in 1296. The seal of the former bears an eight-rayed figure and the legend S' Joh' de Kintoy. The seal of Walter bears a pair of open shears in pale, points up, and S' Walt' de Kintoyir (Bain, II, p. 200,532, 533). William de Kyntor, 'magister ecclesie' in Aberdeen in 1407 is probably the William de Kentor who is in record as a witness in 1410 (SCM., V, p. 19; REA., II, p. 296), Richard of Kyntore, merchant of Aberdeen, who had a safe conduct into England in 1438, is most probably the Richard Kyntor, merchant of Scotland, who had a similar safe conduct in 1451 (Bain, IV, 1114, 1451) and the Richard de Kentor, pro tem. provost of Aberdeen in 1463 (REA., I, p. 286). Alexander Kenturr (without the 'de'), another Aberdeen merchant, who had a safe conduct into England in 1439 (Bain, IV, 1130), may be the Alexander de Kyntor who was elected bailie of the burgh in 1440 (CRA., p. 6). John de Kyntor was bailie of Aberdeen in 1464 (RAA., II, 155), William and David Kintor are recorded there in 1493 (CRA., p. 50), and Christen Kyntoir in 1594 (ibid., p. 93), Alexander Kintire was servant to the earl of Dunfermling, 1684 (Edinb. App.). Kintoir 1602, Kyntour 1556.
