From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From the town of Kirkcaldy in Fife. Willilmus de Kyrcaudi, cleric in Stirling, 1299 (RAA., I, p. 277). In 1331 we have record of money paid to John of Kirkcaldy (ER., I, p. 370), and Andreas de Kirkrildy, capellanus S. Marie de Anderistona (= St. Andrews), was granted a pension of five merks a year by King David II in 1363 (RMS., I, 167). The land of Simon de Kyrcaldy in Edynburgche is mentioned in 1366 (RMS., I, 261; Egidii, p. 19), and perhaps the same Simon appears as a burgess there in 1392 (Egidii, p. 28). John of Kirkaldy, Scots merchant, had a safe conduct into England in 1426 (Bain, IV, 999), Andrew Kirkcaldy was scribe of the town council of Dysart in 1535 (Dysart, p. 3), and in 1540 mention is made of "veneranda mulier Agnes Karcalde" in the same town (ibid., p. 6). Marjory Kirkcaldy was a resident in Dysart in 1572 (ibid., p. 37), and David Kirkaldie was a tenant of the abbot of Newbattle in 1563 (Neubotle, p. 327). Sir William Kirkcaldy of Grange took a prominent part in the murder of Cardinal Beaton in 1546, and was himself executed in 1573. An old family of Kirkcaldy of Inchture ended in an heiress, Marjorie, who was married to Reginald Kinnaird and got the lands confirmed to him by a charter of Robert III (RMS., I, App. II, 1866).
