Of local origin. Kirkhaugh in Cumberland was held by the Viponts in thirteenth century and subinfeoffed to William of Kirkhaugh in 1258 (Moore, Lands, p. 44). A payment was made to Anabelle, widow of William de Kyrkhalch, 1364 (ER., II, p. 124), and Jonet de Kirchalche had a charter from Andreas de Moravia of the lands of Tuchadam with pertinents, 1392 (RMS., I, 844). William de Kyrkhalch witnessed a confirmation charter by David, earl of Carrick in Edinburgh, 1394 (SCM., V, p. 252), and John Kirkhauch de Glenesland is in record, 1677 (Retours, Dumfries, 287). compare Kirkhoe.
