Of local origin from Kirkness in Orkney. There is also a Kirkness in Shetland. Sir Thomas de Kirknes, knight, witnessed a charter by Henry de St. Clair, earl of Orkney, at Kirkwaw in 1391 (RMS., I, 824; Diplomatarium Norvegicum, II, p. 402). Angus of Kirkness appears as archdeacon of Hjaetland (i.e. Shetland) in 1426 (Dipl. Norv., II, p. 512), John of Kirknes was lawman of Orkney in 1438 (SCM., V, p. 391), and John Kirkness of that Ilk was lawrikman in North Sandwick in 1678 (SHR., XIV, p. 59). William M. Kirkness was a bank official in Edinburgh before 1940.
