A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

From a chapel formerly dedicated to S. Patrick which gave name to the firm in the parish of Closebirn. The first of this name in record appears to have been Roger de Kirkpatrick who attested a charter by one of the Bruces who died 1141 (Nisbet, Plates, p. 42), "but neither his office, location, or place,' if he had one, is otherwise mentioned." Ivo and his heirs had a charter from Robert Bruce of a place between the fishings of Blawad and the Water of Esk, c. 1190 (Annandale, I, 1), and a charter from Wilham Bruce of lands in the fee of Pennersaughs, c. 1194—1214 (ibid., p. 3). Roger de Kirkpatrick and Robert de Kirkpatrick witnessed confirmation of a fishery in Torduff between 1194—1211 (Holm Cultram, p. 35). Humfridus de Kirkpatric who witnessed a charter by Henry cde Grahame before 1200 (RHM., 3), is probably Sir Humfridus de Kirkepatric who witnessed along with Sir Roger de Kirkepatric a quitclaim by Richard de Bancori to Robert de Brus of the whole land of Loyerwode (Locharwood) before 1245 (Bain, I, 1684). lvone de Kirkpatrick had a charter of the whole land of Kelosbern from Alexander II in 1232, which remained in possession of the family till 1783"when an improvident heir found it necessary to dispose of the ancient patrimony" (Old statistical account, XIII, p. 232). John de Kirkepatrike of Dumfriesshire rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 206). Roger de Kirkpatric, knight, also of Dumfriesshire, swore fealty to England in the same year. His seal bears in a trefoil compartment three shields meeting at base, each shield charged with a saltire and chief, S' Rogeri de Kirpatric (ibid., p. 185,531; Macdonald, 1523). A Roger de Kirkpatric is traditionally said to have stabbed Cumyn, but the papal bull of excommunication designates the homicide Robert. In the burial place of the Kirkpatricks of Kirkmuchael in Garrell (vernacular pronunciation of Garvald) old churchyard is the monument of the ancestor of the late empress Marie Eugenie of France. Near the end of the eighteenth century William, son of Wilham Kirkpatrick of Conheath, became a wine merchant in Malaga, and married Dona Francesca, daughter of Baron de Grivegnee. One of their daughters, Maria Manuela, married the Count del Montijo, and their daughter, Marie Eugenie, married the Emperor Napoleon III. Sir Bernard Burke, in his Vicissitudes of families (p. 46—49, ed. 1859) narrates that this marriage with a Kirkpatrick was being considered a mesalliance in aristocratic circles, whereupon Mr. Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe of Hoddam, was consulted and produced a Kirkpatrick family-tree showing a root in kings. This was shown to King Ferdinand VII, and so amused him that he exclaimed, "O let the young Montijo marry the daughter of Fingal.".

A Guide to Irish Names (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

Kirkpatrick is basically a Scottish name formed from a place-Kirkpatrick, i.e. the church of St.

Patrick-and most of our Irish Kirkpatricks, especially those to be found in north-east Ulster, are of Scottish descent. Owing to its similarity to the Irish surname Kilpatrick, which can be a form of Gilpatrick or Macgilpatrick (the usual modern form of which is Fitzpartick), Kilpatrick has been widely substituted for Kirkpatrick. The latest available statistics show that the two names are about equally numerous and both are mainly confined to north-east Ulster. In fact Kilpatrick is unknown as an indigenous family in the Fitzpatrick country (see Irish Families p. 145). It was listed in the “census” of 1659-60 as a principal Irish name in two counties (Antrim and Fermanagh). But all the names classed as Irish in that document are not Gaelic. In the records relating to the Plantation of Ulster we find two Kilpatricks in the Lifford area classed as non-Irish, but on the other hand Owen Macgilpatrick who had 128 acres in Baskill, Co. Donegal is among the “natives”. Kilpatricks are fairly numerous today in north Donegal. I have found no evidence to show that these Kilpatricks were of an Irish sept of Mac Giolla Phádraig. In this connexion it is worth remembering that there is also a place-name Kilpatrick in Scotland. Woulfe states that a branch of the Mac Giolla Phádraig (Fitzpatrick) family of Ossory settled in Co. Cavan, but I do not think this can be accepted as the origin of the Ulster Kirkpatricks and Kilpatricks, though the latter (if not the former) were, no doubt, Scottish Gaels: the modern use of MacIlfatrick and MacIlfederick as synonyms of Kilpatrick in Co. Antrim corroborates this.

Ferguson lists both Kilpatrick and Kirkpatrick as branches of the Scottish clan Colquhoun. Three Kirkpatricks from Ulster were notable presbyterian clergymen. Some Kirkpatricks have abbreviated their name to Kirk, which in Munster is sometimes used as a synonym of Quirke.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

Local: from the parish of Kirkpatrick in Dumfriesshire. The family are descended from Ivone Kirkpatrick, temp. David I. On the 10th February, 1306, Robert Bruce, in company with Sir Roger de Kirkpatrick and other gentlemen, met Red John Cummin in the Grey Friars church at Dumfries. A dispute arising between them, Bruce stabbed Cummin twice before the high altar in the church, and rushing out pale and frightened, said, on being questioned as to the cause of his alarm, "I doubt that I have slain the Red Cummin." "Doubtest thou?" exclaimed Kirkpatrick, "I make sure," and hastening into the church he dispatched the wounded Regent with his dagger. In commemoration of this action, King Robert conferred on the family for a crest, a hand holding a dagger in pale, distilling drops of blood, and for a motto: "I make sure."
