From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
There are many individuals of this name in the parish of Kirkton, Roxburghshire, but as the name is attached to so many different localities no certain conclusion can be drawn that it took its origin from the land in this parish. This surname appears in several records in different parts of the country and as the place name is common it is possible that persons bearing this surname are of different origin. Wilham de Kirketon appears as witness in Aberdeen in 1243 (LAC., p. 90). Adam de Kirketone of the county of Edneburk rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears a stag's head cabossed, a cross between the antlers, S' Ade d' Kirketon (Bain, II, p. 213,554). Another Adam de Kirketone of the county of Berewyk also rendered homage in the same year (ibid., p. 208,213). Richard of Kirketon served as a juror at Roxburgh in 1361 (ibid., IV, 61), and Thomas de Kirkton was juror on an inquest held in the episcopal lands of Aldrochty in Moray in 1393 (REM., p. 205). Adam Kirktoune in Craling-mylne produced at the aire at Jedworthe in 1493 a remission for certain crimes committed by him (Trials, I, p. 18) and William Kyrkton was a notary public in Glasgow in 1498 (REG., 479). Adam Kirktoun held the lands of Stewartfield, Jedburgh, in 1607 (Retours, Roxburgh, 46), Mr. John Kirktown was schoolmaster of Jedburgh before 1691 (Peebles CR.), and John Kirktoun was portioner of Lilhesleaf, 1748 (Heirs, 218).
