Kissack Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
(Celtic + Hebrew) Son of Isaac, q.v. [Manx MacIsaac, early 15th cent. McIssak, M'Issacke] (French) forms of Cussack, q.v.
There has been confusion with Kissick, q.v.
Contracted from MacIsaac, 'Isaac's Son' is rarely found except in the Isle of Man. Gilbert McIssak was one of the twenty-four 'Keys of Mann' in 1418, and in 1422 Hawley M’Issacke ' was arraigned for that he felloniously rose upon John Walton, Lieutenant of Mann, sitting in the Court of Kirk Michaell'.
From the French, Queyssac; a personal name.
Kissack: from Quissac in Lot - arrivals and settlers in England when our arms were being driven out of the South of France. There the petty nobles and knights passed from one side to another without scruple, according to the pay offered, or to the chance of plunder, or to revenge a slight. Some, who had too deeply compromised themselves on the English side, were obliged to abandon their paternal acres and castles built in and out of the limestone rocks, and take ship at Bordeaux and retire to England. The condition of misery in which the people were during the Hundred Years War cannot be realized by those who have not visited the Causses, and seen how the unhappy peasants were constrained to make their houses on the face of a precipice, and at night haul up their cattle to their rock fastnesses. See my “Deserts of Central France” for these rock refuges.
