User-submitted Reference
This is as told from my grandparents, both born in Pennsylvania during the early 1910s. They were the first generation born on US soil. Their grandparents came from the Poznan area predominantly. The story is that a German in the medical officer with the Army lost his leg during one of the many conflicts. While recuperating, he fell in love with his nurse, a Polish woman. Her father would only give permission for them to marry if he added the 'owski' to his name. Thus was born the family name. If there is a '...owska' on the end of the name, this denotes a single female. The DNA is shown in both the German and Polish nations.
