User-submitted Reference

This is a topographic or toponymic family name from Greece, relating to the area of the Kloukinochoria (meaning 'villages of Kloukines' in Greek). This is a group of seven villages (Zarouchla, Agia Varbara, Solo, Peristeri, Mesorougi and Vounaki) in the mountainous area above Akrata, Achaia and close to the Kalavryta region. Achaia and the highest peak of mountain Aroania or Chelmos. The etymology of the area name does not have any meaning in Greek and is probably related to the Frankish Abbey of Cluny, which is known to have ruled the area according to the Frankish feudal system, during the Frankokratia period, which took place for a few decades after the 4th Crusade, in the Peloponnese (13th century - Principality of Achaia or Morea).

As a family name appeared at the end of 18th, early 19th century in the small shepherd's settlement Lesmoi, located above the Ladon river gorge in the area of Tropea (named Vervitsa back then), in Arcadia region. It was given to a family (or families) that migrated there from the Kloukinochoria area, to denote their place of origin (the previous family name or exact place of origin or reason of migration is not known).

The name variant Kloukiniotis-Kloukinioti means exactly the same thing, i.e. the person coming from Kloukines-Kloukinochoria, and it is used in Achaia region.
