This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the kneller.' a bellringer; v. Knowler (1). The surname is English in spite of Sir Godfrey Kneller. Mr. Lower says it was formerly common in East Sussex (Patronymica Britannica). But I cannot for one moment accept the local derivation he suggests.
(English) Bellringer, Toller [from Middle English knellen, knillen, Old English cnyllan, to toll a bell]
Sir Godfrey K, was a native of Lubeck; but the name is also indigenous to England. Knelle is a topographical word of uncertain import, and a person residing at such a spot would be called At-Knelle or Kneller. The name was formerly very common in E. Sussex, and may have been derived from Great Knell, in the parish of Beckley. See Thorpe's Catalogue of Battel Abbey Charters.
