Knifton, a name now represented in the Derby district, is a form of Kniveton, the name of a Derbyshire parish. The Knivetons were a distinguished knightly family in the county for many centuries. The Knivetons of Bradley, the senior branch of the family, owned the manor of Bradley for centuries, and as far back as the reign of Edward I.; in the reign of James I. this manor was in the possession of the junior branch, the Knivetons. of Mercaston, who served as high sheriffs of the county in 1490 and 1614, and were rewarded with a baronetcy (G.).
