William Knightes sone of Eglesham of the county of Lanark rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 213). Francis Knythsoun was bailie of Edinburgh in 1464 (Neubotle, p. 252). In the same year Cuthbert Knichtstoun, Scottish merchant, had a safe conduct to travel in England (Bain, IV, 1343), and in 1466, as Cudbert Knythson or Knychtson, he appears as burgess of Edinburgh (Kelso, 531). In 1531 a charter was granted to Thomas Knychtsoun by John, prior of Pittenweem (May, lviii). The seal of George Cnichson, son and heir to umquhile Alexander Knichtsoun, burgess of Edinburgh, is appended to a charter of 1521 (Macdonald, 1528). Thomas Knychtsone was juror on a witchcraft trial in Orkney, 1616 (MCM., II, p. 190). There was a family of this name of Malleny, Midlothian.
