From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

KNOCKDOLIAN: From Knockdolian in the parish of Colmonell, Ayrshire. Johan de Knoudolyan of Ayrshire rendered homage, 1296. His seal bears two heads respecting, a lily between, S' Joh'is de Knodolian (Bain, II, p. 205,557). Dugallus filius Johannis de Knokdolian had a charter of ' terris de Avelott (Wellok)" from Robert I (RMS., I, App. II, 341), and Johannes de Cnocdolian, knight, witnessed a confirmation charter by King Robert the Bruce to John de Carlton of the lands of Dalmakeran, c. 1316—1318 (Annandale, I, p. 132). Nicholas Knockdolian was among the Scots prisoners taken at the battle of Durham in 1346 (Hailes, Annals, II, p. 389). He may be the Nicholas de Knocdolian who witnessed a charter of the land of Duppolle to the Friars Preachers of Ayr in 1381 (Friar, Ayr, p. 23). The lands of Knockdolian passed into possession of Fergus M'Cubbin, c. 1660.
