Kopad Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The surname Kopad is derived form ancient Hindu mythology/history and is the other name of Kamadeva, the god of love and sensuality. Kamadeva obtained this name when the Lord Shiva was in deep meditation and the Mother Parvati, Lord Shiva's wife, was aroused and wanted to have sex, but Lord Shiva continued in his mediation. Mother Parvati then called for Kamadeva the god of love and asked him to arouse sensuality in Lord Shiva to wake him up from his meditation.

On getting Instructions from Mother Parvati Kamadev focused on Lord Shiva to arouse feelings of sexuality in him to disturb his meditation and wake him up.

As a result of Kamadeva focusing on Lord Shiva the feelings of sexuality/sensuality got aroused and Lord Shiva woke up from his meditation and got very angry (kop means 'anger' in Hindi/Sanskrit) with Kamadeva (kopad in Hindi/Sanskrit means 'one who gives anger') on realising that it was Kamadeva who disturbed him from his meditation.

Filled with anger Lord Shiva Opened his third eye and burned Kamadeva. On seeing all this happen Mother Parvati felt sorry for Kamadeva and told Lord Shiva that Kamadeva had done that on her request and requested Lord Shiva to bring him to life again. Lord Shiva on Parvati's request brought Kamadeva to life.

Since Kamadeva, the god of love, became the reason for Lord Shiva getting angry he was named Kopad (giver of anger). Kopad was distorted and is called Cupid in Roman mythology and later in Christian culture where it is similarly a god of love. Similarly cupit in Hindi means 'anger'.
