User-submitted Reference

Hungarian surname of Slovak origin, probably derived from the name of a village that today forms part of the town of Martin, northwestern Slovakia. The name of the former village, 'Košúty', means 'goat' in Slovak. The most famous Kossuth, Lajos Kossuth (1802-1894), was governor-president of the Hungarian State during the freedom fight and war of independence of 1848-49. Practically all Hungarian towns and many Hungarian villages have streets named after him.
