Because of the declension in Polish grammar, female bearers are called Kotowska, pronounced kɔˈtɔfska, while the plural form is Kotowscy, pronounced kɔˈtɔfst͡sɨ. The name contains the prefix kot, which means cat. The suffix ski indicates that the original bearers had a noble background and were possibly members of the so called Szlachta during the aristocratic epoch of Poland. Historic bearers of the name were members of the former crest communities Kierdeja, Łada, Pobóg, Pomian, Puchała and Trzaska.
