Kouprianov Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The Kupriyanov surname is derived from a baptismal Russian name Kupriyan/Kiprian meaning 'Cypriot' or 'Cyprian' (a native or inhabitant of Cyprus).

The surname gained its popularity after the Christianisation of Ancient Rus'. It originated from St. Cyprian of Carthage, who was respected and venerated as a protector of the people. He was the leading bishop of the Church of Africa during the mid-third century and a notable early Christian writer of Berber descent. St. Cyprian is a saint in both the Western and Eastern churches, and his life had a significant impact on the East Slavic world.

In Rus' people believed that children named after a saint or a martyr would have a better life under the protection of their patron. Such a worldview resulted in new names like Kupriyan or Kiprian, which later developed into new surnames like Kupriyanov or Kiprianov.
