Kozioł is a Polish surname originating from Nitra in the Nitra Principality in the 8th Century AD from prince Gozil (Kozel), whose name meant 'cauldron' in the Bavarian language. The fall of this early Lechitic principality and his subsequent death brought his family to modern day Koźle in the Śląsk region, Poland. His crest was a red shield with a white goat symbolising Christian fidelity and had since split into the recognised noble families of Kocioł ('cauldron' in Polish) and Kozieł and Kozioł (Billy goat).
