Their name is most probably derived from the Crimean Tatar term 'qazaq', meaning 'free man', 'independent wanderer' or 'adventurer'. This name may be related to the ethnonyms of the Kazakhs (also written as Qazaq) and of the Khazars (whose name, too, is linked to the Turkic verb root 'qaz-', meaning 'to ramble' or 'to roam').
