Kranendonk Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The name refers to a relatively high place in watery surroundings, donk. One of these was ideally suited for transmigrating cranes in the southern part of the Netherlands near the Belgian border. From them the castle built there in the 13th century by members of the Horne and Altena families derived its name (it was demolished by the French in 1673).

A long lineage of descendants from a bastard son exported the name primarily to the island of Jsselmonde and the Hoeksche Waard (to the south of Rotterdam), where it was also adopted by the descendants of a father who married a Kranendonk widow. From here the name spread to the rest of the world by emigration. Today Cranendonck is also the name of the municipality that includes a number of smaller villages in the original region.
