Kyle Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Of local origin from the district of Kyle in Ayrshire. Walter of Kyle had a safe conduct into England in 1424 (Bain, IV, 970), Margaret Kile possessed a tenement in Glasgow in 1428 (LCD., p. 245), George Kyle appears as burgess of Edinburgh in 1538 (SCM., II, p. 195), and John Kile and Thomas Kile were burgesses of Irvine also in 1538 (Irvine, I, p. 42). Robert Kyle who appears in record as bailie of Irvine in 1572 and 1590 (ibid., p. 56, 64) is probably the Robert Kyle, burgess of Irwene, who was retoured heir of Andrew Kyle, resident in Glasgow, in 1606 (Inquis,, 259). James Kyll was a cooper in Edinburgh in 1662 (Edinb, Marr.), and David Kyle, portioner of Lassudden, 1772 (Heirs, 363). The Kyles of Laurel Hill, county Derry, are of Scottish descent. Kyile 1556.
In his Some Anglicized Surnames in Ireland, Padraig Mac GiollaDomhnaigh makes the surprising statement that Kyle is an anglicized form of the Scottish Mac Suile. It is, however, corroborated by the summary of returns of local registrars, published by Matheson in 1901, in which it is recorded that in the Ballycastle district (Co. Antrim) Kyle and MacSuile were actually used as synonyms by members of the same family. The principal family of Kyle came from Ayrshire to Co. Derry at the time of the Plantation of Ulster and the name has since become numerous in that province, especially in Derry and Antrim. They are in the hearth money rolls of Counties Derry and Antrim and as Kylle in those of Co. Tyrone (1663-1669); many Kyles appear in the wills records for the diocese of Derry from 1664 onwards and a smaller number in those of Raphoe, Clogher and also Dublin. It is occasionally found elsewhere, e.g. Henry Kyle who is listed in the parish of Killenawle in the Tipperary Hearth Money Rolls of 1666. A branch of the family became established in the United States early in the eighteenth century: Samuel Kyle settled in Pennsylvania in 1738 and his grandson James Henderson Kyle (1854-1901), a congregational minister, was an American senator of note. In Ireland, apart from the famous rugby footballer Jacky (now Dr. John) Kyle, the most noteworthy men of the name have been two bishops: one a Protestant Dr. Samuel Kyle (1770-1848) provost of Trinity College, Dublin, from 1820 to 1831, when he became bishop of Cork and Ross; the other a Catholic Dr. Kyle (d. 1869) vicar-apostolic, Northern District, Scotland.
(Celtic) belonging to Kyle (Ayrshire), or Dweller at the Narrow or Strait [Gaelic caol] But in Ireland the Kyle- names are from either Irish cill, a chapel, or coill, a wood.
An anglicized form of the Scottish Mac Suile. The principal families of this name came from Ayrshire to Co. Derry at the time of the Plantation of Ulster. SIF 101
(English) Dweller near the Kyle (narrow), a river in Yorkshire.
A topographical term implying a sound or strait. Jamieson.
Local: from the district of Kyle in Ayrshire.
Local. From a district of the same name in Ayrshire, Scotland. Gaelic, Coill, a wood. The river Coyle runs through the district, whence, perhaps, the name.
From the German, Keil; from the Flemish, Kuyle; a personal name.
