In trying to research my former husband's family, I was told by a Filipino researcher that Laborte (most commonly used with the lower-case "b") is a rare corruption of the French name, LaPorte ('the door'). France did have contact with the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era. The Spanish people would pronounce the "e" at the end of LaPorte (la-POR-tay). Over generations and through local pronunciation, it became Laborte (la-BOR-tay). The researcher told me that those who share the surname Laborte are undoubtedly related, however distant.
