User-submitted Reference
This surname can be found as earlier as the 1520s. It means 'footman', 'running footman', or 'valet', from the Middle French, laquais, meaning 'foot soldier', 'footman', or 'servant', a word of unknown origin; perhaps from the Old Provençal, lacai, from, lecai, meaning 'glutton', 'covetous', from lecar, meaning 'to lick'. The alternative etymology is that it comes via the Old French, laquay, from the Catalan, alacay, from the Arabic al-qadi, meaning 'the judge'. Yet another guess traces it through the Spanish lacayo, from the Italian lacchè, from the Modern Greek oulakes, from the Turkish ulak, meaning 'runner', 'courier'. This suits the original sense better, but OED says Italian lacchè is from French. Sense of 'servile follower' appeared 1580s. As a political term of abuse it dates from 1939 in communist jargon.
