Lacerda is the portuguese version of the spanish La Cerda. The eldest son of King Alfonso X of Castile, Fernando, was born with a thick bristle in the chest (some say in the back). So the prince was known as Fernando De La Cerda, since "Cerda" means bristle.

Fernando died before his father, at only nineteen, but he already had two sons. Nevertheless, his brother took the throne from his sons, and their families (not being royals), took the surname La Cerda.
