Gaelic Lachlann (dial. Lachlainn), the modern form of the still older but now disused Lochlann (Celt. Rev,, VI p. 16). That Lochlann means 'Norway' Prof. A. Bugge has abundantly shown (Royal race of Dublin, 1900). Lohlan, son of Huddredy, witnessed a charter by Uchtred, son of Fergus, lord of Galloway, to the Hospital of S. Peter at York, c. 1158—64 (Bain, II, p. 422). Lochlan, perhaps the same person, was heir of Fergus of Galloway a. 1166 (LSC., p. 19). Eugene fiz Loghlan of the county of Perth rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 204). Cristin, son of Louchelan, bailiff of Strivelin, made payment of the issues of the town, 1304—5 (ibid., p. 440). Adam Lachlane was juror at Irvine, 1417 (Irvine, I, p. 20), and Laccan Doncanson Cambel was charter witness at Perth, 1470 (OPS., II, p. 111). The name of Johnne Lauchland in Mossyde, 1668 (Corsehill, p. 81) may be this name with accretionary d. The 40 penny lands of Lauchlenstoun in Ayrshire are mentioned in 1674 (Retours, Ayr, 598).
