A Border surname confined mainly to Selkirkshire and the vales of Ettrick and Yarrow. There is a Laidlawstiel near Galashiels. There is a tradition that the Laidlaws had their origin in England, and the name has been traced over the Border down to the south of England under the variants Laidlaw, Laidley, Laidler, Ladly, and Ludlow. William of Lodelawe was charged in 1296 with concealing a horse from the English (Bain, II, 822). William Ladlaw was portioner of Newtoune, 1650 (RRM., I, p. 127), John Laidlaw appears in Blackchester, parish of Lauder, 1674 (Lauder), and Thomas Laidlaw in Haugh, 1682 (Peebles CR.). A family of Laidlaw (Ladylye, Laidley, or Laidlaw) of Mosfennan, Peelesshire, was seated there during part of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries (Stodart, II, p. 308). William Laidlaw (1780—1845) was confidential friend of Sir Walter Scott and also his steward at Abbotsford. Laidla 1644.
