A form of Old English long, 'long,' 'tall.' Thomas Laing engaged in 1357 that Dumfries shall pay part of the ransom of King David II. Thomas Layng, notary public in Edinburgh in 1461 (LSC., p. 151), appears again in 1467 as Thomas Laing, burgess and notary public (Neubotle, p. 261,263). John Layng was rector of Newlands in 1472 (REG., 398), treasurer to King James III (Nisbet, I, p. 202), and bishop of Glasgow, 1473—74 (REG., p. 422). The surname is common in the Glasgow Protocol books of the sixteenth century, Archibald Layng was priest and notary public in St. Andrews diocese in 1502 (Bain, IV, 1691), and John Laying appears in Tolhoip. Shetland, in 1623. David Laing (1790—1878) was a distinguished antiquary. Laing, like Lang, is sometimes used in Kintyre as a curtailed form of Loynachan (from O'Loynachan), which see. Lainge 1556, Laynge 1673, Leang 1597.
