From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Lakenham,' a parish in Norfolk. This corruption is one of many of a similar character; compare Buckman for Buckenham, Putman for Putnam (Puttenham), Swetman for Swetnam (Swetenham), Deadman for Debnam (Debenham), &c. Lower's suggestion that it means the lake man, the man who lived by the lake, is not supported by any proof, (a) ?Bapt. 'the son of Lacman,' an old personal name. Lacman assisted Duke Richard of Normandy against Odo of Chartres (Freeman, Norman Conq.). Lacman was king of Man, 1075-1093 (ibid.). A Scandinavian name corresponding to Engl. Lawman. But I can find no corroborative evidence in the rolls of the 12th, 13th, and 14th centuries.
