From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Of territorial origin from the old barony of the name in Berwickshire. William de Lamberton witnessed a charter by David I to the church of Dunfermline of a fishing in the Tweed and a toft in Berwick, c. 1136 (RD., 10), and also witnessed another charter by the same king (1147) confirming Earl Gospatric's gift of the villages of Ederham and Nisbet to the monks of S. Cuthbert at Coldingham. Adam de Lamberton granted c. 1190—1200 to his nephew a third part of his land of Lambertun, and within the same dates he granted to Galfrid de Hessewel, his grandson, a third part of the same lands (BNCH., XVI, p. 332). John de Lambertoune witnessed a grant of land in Dunypais, c. 1200 (Cambus., 83), and attested the letters of protection to the prior and monks of Lesmahagow granted by Alexander II in 1230 (Kelso, 185). Ade de Lambirtoun was steward to the prior of Coldingham, c. 1270 (BNCH., XVI, p. 334), and several individuals of the name holding lands in the counties of Berwick, Lanark, Edinburgh, Fife, Forfar, and Stirling, rendered homage in 1296 for their possessions (Bain, II). William de Lambirtoun granted the church of Deruisyn (Dairsie) to the prior and convent of St. Andrews in 1300 (RPSA., p. 120), John of Lamerton was burgess of Innerkethyne in 1395 (Laing, 82), and David Limbertoune is recorded in Watersyde, 1658 (Kilbarchan)."From this ancient family, which has been long extinct, probably sprung the famous William Lamberton, bishop of St. Andrews, the most distinguished person of the name, by whose advice and assistance the immortal Bruce was encouraged in his efforts to deliver Scotland from the English yoke" (Scot. Nat., II, p. 628).
