Diminutives of Lamb, which see. "A name once of good repute as a native name in Angus, though those who bear it in modern times have sought a French origin, and spell it L'Ami" (Innes, p. 31). Henry Lambi was a charter witness in Dundee, 1281 (HP., II, p. 223). Gilbert Lamby and John Lamby were members of inquest made at St. Andrews in 1302—3 (Bain, II, 1350), and John Lamhy was witness in Brechin, 1364 (REB., I, 20). Alexander Lambie had a charter from David II of the lands of Bernes in the barony of Crail, Fife (RMS., I, App. II, 932), and Liolph and Nigel Lamby were custumars of Montrose, 1372—79 (ER., II, p. 381,406, 561, etc.). Liulph Lambie in 1401 witnessed a wadset in favor of Duthac Carnegy. Mariora Lammeis dothyr' and 'Thome Lammeis wif were king's tenants in Strathdee, 1527 (Grant, III, p. 70). There were Lamies or Lammies of Dunkenny as early as 1542, and George Lammie of Dunkenny was a charter witness in 1628 (REB., II, 244). Andrew Lamby was one of those accused of part in the murder of Riccio in 1565 (RPC., I, p. 437), Silvester Lammie was laureated at University of St. Andrews, 1617, Sibella Lambie is recorded in Wester Futhie in 1613, Silvester Lammy in Montrose, 1730 (Brechin), and Robert Lambie, maltman at Deanfield, is recorded in 1772 (Campsie). The L'Amys who succeeded the Lambies of Dunkenny are merely akin to the old family in name. Lamme 1500, Lammee 1603, L'Amy 1401. There is also an old ballad of 'Andrew Lammie.'.
