Lamont Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

The name of an important family in Argyllshire in early thirteenth century, derived from ON. logmadr, 'lawman, lawyer.' The Gaelic name of the family was Macerchar, which see, and Lawman may have been adopted in consequence of their chief having been invested with some judicial powers. Lamond also occurs as a surname in the rural districts of Scandinavian England, especially in Lancashire. The Lancashire Assize Rolls for 1247 mention Adam, son of Laghman and Adam Laweman, probably the same person (Record Soc. ed., 1904, p. 28, 39). Ladhmunn, son of Donald, son of Malcolm III was killed by the man of Moray in 1116 (ES., II, p. 160: his name "may be considered an indication of his mother's nationality"). Between 1230 and 1246 "Duncanus filius Ferchar et Laumannus filius Malcolmi nepos ejusdem Duncani" granted the church of S. Finan or Kilfinnan to the monks of Paisley (RMP., p. 132). Malcolm, the son of Lauman, and Malmore, the son of Laumun (the latter is also mentioned as Malmory Maklaweman of Argyll), are mentioned again between 1270 and 1290 (RMP.; Palgrave, Documents, p. 300). In 1290 a dispensation was granted Molmure, son of Lagman, knight, and Christina, daughter of Alexander called of Ergadia, who intermarried in ignorance that they were connected in the fourth degree of affinity (Pap. Lett,, I, p. 518). About the same date John, the son of Lagman, son of Gilcom M'Ferchar, granted certain lands in heritage to Sir Colin Kambel (OPS., II, p. 53). Lawemund McGreghere (error for McEreghere) was summoned in 1292 to render homage to King John Balliol (APS., I, p. 448a), and in 1296 John Laumansone of the county of Perth rendered homage for his lands (Bain, II, p. 204). Duncan filius Laumanni witnessed a charter by Robert II in 1384 to Duncan, earl of Lennox (Levenax, p. 8). John Lawmwnd was bailie of Cowale in 1456 (LCD., p. 179), and in 1466 the monks of Paisley had a dispute with John Lawmond of that Ilk regarding the church of Kilfinan, which was settled in their favor on production of the charters granted to them by his ancestors (RMP., p. 145—151) The Lamonts are said to have been formerly very powerful in Cowal, the chief being described as Maclamond of all Cowal ("Mac-Laomuinn mor Chomhal uile"). The clan was at one time persecuted by the Campbells, and a savage massacre of Lamonds was one of the charges against the marquess of Argyll in 1661. There was also a Gillebride filius Lamund witness to a charter by Fergus, earl of Buchan before 1214 (CAB., p. 408). Johann von Lamont, the distinguished Bavarian astronomer and magnetician, was born John Lamont, son of the earl of Fife's forester at Braemar in 1805 and died in 1879. His portrait is in Fischer II, pl. opp. p. 170. Ladmann 1467, Lagmane 1410, Lamand 1708, Lamann 1431 Lamentht 1586, Lamount 1673, Lawinond 1529, Lawmonth 1583, Lawmonthe 1649 Lawmound 1597. In the belief that the name is of French origin it is commonly mispronounced Lamont' in the United States. Lam'ont is the correct way. See Maclamond.
