This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Lambert,' from the nick. Lamb and diminutive Lamb-in; compare viol-in, Robin, Col-in. The 'g' in Laming, &c, is excrescent (compare Jennings), and the 'p' for 'b' in Lampin is a common exchange; compare Lampson and Lampett.

Lambyn Clay played before the King at Westminster, at the great festival in 1306 (Popular Music of the Olden Time, Chappell, i. 29'). The Flemish Lambert had a great influence on English nomenclature for a time, nearly as great, in fact, as Baldwin.
