From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Of local origin from the town of the same name in Lanarkshire. Individuals bearing the name occur in record as charter witnesses as early as the second half of the twelfth century. William de Lannarch witressed a charter by Eschina, wife of Walter (the Steward) before 1177 (RMP., p. 74). In 1279 Robert de Lanarc was one of the witnesses to a settlement regarding the tithes of the church of Roberton (Kelso, 346), and two years later Richard de Lanark appears as a witness in the Chartulary of Cambuskenneth (Cambus., 1). William of Lanark occurs in a list of the garrison of Stirling Castle, probably at its surrender to the Scots in the end of the year 1299 (Bain, II, 119). Ninian Lanarik was a cordiner in Edinburgh in 1605 (Edinb. Marr.).
