Lune [The origin of the river-name is prob. to be found in the early form of Welsh lluan, or the cognate Gaelic loinn-, bright, glistening (= Middle Irish lainn, bright): besides the Lancashire Lune, Lun, Lon, or Loyne, there are a R. Lune in Yorks and a R. Loyne, and streams called Lun-an, in Scotland. The second element is the Latin castra (pl. of castrum), a camp] Loncastre.—Domesday Book.
