Landers Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Other extant forms of this name are Launders and Landry: it derives from the mediaeval de Londres (i.e. of London) and its variants Londra and Londrey. De London was also in use in the thirteenth century. From that time until the present day these names are mainly found in Munster, the former in all the counties of that province except Clare, the latter in Co. Limerick. Landers was listed as a principal Irish name in the barony of Decies, Co. Waterford in the 1659-60 “census” and statistics indicate that in quite modern times Waterford is the county in which it is most numerous; as Launder we find it in the city of Waterford in 1575: it occurs in the return of householders paying hearth-money in 1665 in ten different parishes of Co. Tipperary; the place Ballylanders is in the south-east corner of Co. Limerick. The earliest reference to the name in Ireland I have met (apart from the Archbishop of Dublin, Henry de Londres, who was papal legate in 1217-21) is in 1260 when an official enquiry was made as to the holding of Daniel Laundry, son of William Laundry “the Londoner” at Clondegad, Co.

Clare; and later in the thirteenth century it appears twice in Co. Kerry, and, to take a modern statistic for that county, there were 23 Landers families in Kerry in 1911; for the remaining county, with which the name is less closely associated, Cork, we must turn to the wills and marriage licence bonds recorded for the dioceses of Cork, Ross and Cloyne and various municipal records of the eighteenth century.

London is much rarer though just as ancient as Landers: it occurs as Londown without the de in Dungarvan in 1333.

Though Glanders has been reported as a synonym of Landers in use in Co. Waterford Glanders is according to Woulfe, a form of Gillanders i.e. Mac Giolla Aindréis. Gillanders, alias MacLandrish, is a Monaghan name; MacLandrish is found in Rathlin Island.

Lander in England may be derived from the old French lavandier (washerman) and so be a synonym of the surname Lavender, but this alternative origin may be disregarded in Ireland, though Lavender is not unknown in this country: it occurs in Griffith's Valuation of Co. Wicklow (1854).
