Robert de Landeles confirmed a g: ant of six bovates of Brochesmuth to the Abbey of Kelso a. 1174, which was witnessed by Hugh de Landeles and Sequard de Landeles (Kelso, 322). William de Laundeles, who died 1227 (Chron. Mail., s.a.), was son of John, son of Orm, lord of Hunum (Hownam), who appears in record, 1164—74 (Melros, p. 141). Robertus de Landeles witnessed gift of Herol (Errol) to Willelmus de Haia by William the Lion (SCM., II, p. 303,305), Walter de Laundells was prisoner of war taken at Dunbar, 1296, and Freskums de Laundeles of Roxburghshire rendered homage in the same year. His seal bears a stag's head cabossed, within an orle, S' Freskin de Landeles (Bain, II, p. 177,200, 532). William de Landallis (Landel, Landells, Laundels, Laundelys) was bishop of St. Andrews, 1341—85 (Dowden, Bishops, p. 25—27). William Landallis had a charter of lands of Oxenhame, 1390—91 (RMS., I, App. II, 1678), and as de Laundelis had a charter of the lands of Swynset about the same time (ibid., 813). Simon Landailis was a monk of Cupar Abbey, 1456 (Panmure, II, 236), William Landalis leased part of Cowbyr, 1457, and Wil Landal, probably the same person, was tenant in Kemphill, 1474 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 132,193). The family ended in direct line in an heiress who was married to Sir Alexander Home, first lord Home. Ebenezer Landells, projector of Punch, was a native of Berwick-on-Tweed. Landaill 1606, Landallys 1448.
