As a byname this occurs in Old English charters as early as 972—92, e.g. "Aetheric thes langa" (Cartularium Saxanicum, 1130), and "Eadweard se langa" (Battle of Maldon, 1. 273). William Lange of the county of Berewyke rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 207). Adam Lang was one of an inquest on lands in Aberdeen in 1341 (REA., I, p. 69), and Walter Lang appears as a burgess of Edinburgh in 1381 and 1392 (Egidii, p. 22, 28). Willelmus Lange witnessed an instrument of concord between the bishop of Aberdeen and John de Forbes dominus ejusdem in 1391 (REA., I, p. 189). Robert Lang was chaplain to Duncan, earl of Lennox between 1394—98 (Levenax, p. 60, 65, 74), and Wilham Lang was rector of the church of Turreve (Turriff) in 1408 (AAB.). Thomas Lang was bailie of the abbot of Holyrood in 1457 (Neubotle, 284), a William Lang appears in Brechin in 1435 (REB., I, 79), and Thomas Lange in Elenehall was a charter witness in 1580 (Laing, 1002). A burgess family of this name long maintained a position of influence in the town affairs of Selkirk, and John Lang was freeman of the Craft of Taylors there in 1650. Andrew Lang, classical scholar and folklorist, and Cosmo Gordon Lang, archbishop of Canterbury, are perhaps the two most prominent bearers of the surname. The Loynachans, an old family in Kintyre, changed their name to Lang.
