LANGLAND, Langlands: The old family of Langlands of that Ilk derived their name from a small property of the name in Peeblesshire. The family were also lords of half the barony of Wilton in Roxburghshire, and sometimes took their designation from that property. The family ended in heirs female with the death at Hawick in 1814 of Miss Langlands, who was buried in Wilton Church. Marion Cumyne, widow of quondam Johannes de Langland, had a charter of the lands of Milsallystoun and Ochtirheuyd in 1364 (RMS., I, 151) Charles Langlandis was vicar of Dryvisdall, 1531 (Soltre, p. 107), and Jemie Langland was tenant on the Abbey lands of Kelso, 1567 (Kelso, p. 524). James Langlands was called to account in 1576 as surety for Will Robson and decreed to pay 20 marks as assythment on behalf of the latter (RPC., II, p. 571). Gawan Langlandis appears in the Register of Cupar Abbey c. 1550, and John Langlandis is ecorded in Dunfermline, 1561 (Dunfermline). James Langlands, younger in the Queinsferrie, 1653 (Inquis., 3857), and Robert Langlands in Wiltoune burne, 1696 (Peebles CR.).
