This surname is derived from a geographical locality. At first sight this might seem to be a nick, for a huntsman, &c, from the length of the horn he carried; compare Shakespear, Wagstaff, &c. Probably, however, it is local, from some piece of land so called from its shape. Then the surname would originally be 'at the lang horn,' from residence thereby; compare Hartshorn, which is local. Also v. Horn.
