Laoshe Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Laoshe - is a shortened form of the Yorùbá name Oláòsebìkan - (re-mi-do-re-do-re), meaning 'wealth is not restricted to one source'.

It was the middle name of Surakat Olaosebikan Ajayi (1900-1968), a wealthy businessman from Ìbarà, Abéòkúta, Ogun State, Nigeria.

When registering as a distributor with the British trading company - GB Ollivant Nigeria Ltd. (later a division of UAC/Unilever plc) in the 1950s, his full name was considered too long for their invoices, hence it was shortened to 'Sura Laose'.

Due to the confusion in pronouncing the s (as in 'see') rather than sh (as in 'sheep') sound; in some Yorùbá dialects, the family added h to make it Laoshe instead of Laose.
