From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
From the lands of Lapraik, of old Lekprevik. The old castle of Lekprevik is about a mile and a half from Kilbride in Lanarkshire. The family of Lapraik are said to have had a grant of the heritable office of sergeant and coroner of the lordship of Kilbride in the reign of Robert III confirmed to them by several charters of the Jameses (OPS., I, p. 101). Jacobus de Lekprewyk had a royal charter of the lands of Polkame in Kyle regis in 1365 (RMS., I, 204), and Alexander de Lekprewikk de eadem is in record as a charter witness in 1450 (ibid., II, 408). Alexander de Lekprewyk witnessed an instrument of sasine of the superiority of Pollok in 1486 (Pottok, I, p. 192), Jame Lekprewik was "fylit of pycry" (i.e. pilfering) in 1488 (Lanark, p. 1), John Loparx possessed a tenement in Glasgow in 1498 (REG., p. 500), and Alexander Likprivik appears in 1509 (REG., 488). James Lekprywyk who was made perpetual vicar of the parish church of Inverness in 1521 is probably James Lekprewik, vicar of Arbirlot in 1522 (RAA., II, 559,575). John Lekpreuik is in record in Dalquharn in 1575, and another John Lekpreuik in Grenoktoun appears as a witness in the same year (RRM., III, p. 265,281), and still another John Likprevik was burgess of Edinburgh in 1583 (Soltre, p. 150). Robert Lekprevik introduced printing into St. Andrews in 1572, and Alexander Lecprevik was one of those tried for the murder of George Hamilton in 1509 (Trials, I, p. 62,110). In 1607 Gavin Lekprevik was ordered put "in the joggis" for "dinging of Marioun Maxwell his stepmother" (MCM., I, p. 408). John Lapraik (1737—1807), a minor poet, was a friend of Robert Bums. Lekprevek 1478, Likprevik 1610, Leikprivick 1622, Lekpriuick 1562, Lekprivik 1594, Lekpreuik 1509.
