Larminie Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

The Larminies have only been established as an Irish family since the early eighteenth century and the name is very rare to-day, but it is included here because they were quite numerous in Co. Mayo prior to the Great Famine and from these people came the poet William Larminie (1849-1900). My evidence for the foregoing statement is a rental of the O'Donel estate for the year 1829 in which several tenants called Larminie appear. The founder of the family in Ireland was not a farmer but a London flax dresser who in 1721 leased land in and around Newport, Co. Mayo. He was Samuel Larminie (1693-1757), son of François Larminie of Picardy, a Huguenot refugee. The poet was great-grandson of this Samuel and he was born at Castlebar. In France the name was normally Lerminier and was associated in that country with the weaving industry.

Of Huguenot origin this name is now rare, but was formerly fairly numerous in Co. Mayo, where it was established in the early eighteenth century.
