Larrissey Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Ó Learghusa This sept originated in the barony of Carra, Co. Mayo, but the name has long been mainly found in Co. Kilkenny and adjacent areas. SIF 104
The Larrisseys are an exception to the general rule that a name is found to-day mainly in the locality where its sept originated. There is no doubt that the sept of Ó Learghusa belonged to the barony of Carra in Mayo: we have the authority of the Book of Lecan and other genealogical tracts for that and we do find it in Connacht as late as 1591 (as O'Larysa in Fiant No. 5611), yet by 1659 Petty's “census”
lists Larissy as a principal Irish name in the barony of Maryborough, Queen's Co. (Leix); it occurs in the hearth money rolls of North Tipperary about that time and, coming to the last century, Griffith's Valuation reveals that people of the name were then numerous in Co. Kilkenny, with some families also in the adjacent counties of Leix and Waterford. Of these no doubt was James Larrissey, a prominent member of James Freeney's highwaymen about a hundred years earlier. The obvious inference from the facts given above, and from any other reference to the name which I have met, is that there were two distinct septs of Ó Learghusa, one in Connacht and one in south Leinster, rather than the alternative possibility of a migration from Connacht to Leinster; but I have found no evidence of the existence of a Leinster sept of the name in pre-Norman or even in late mediaeval times.
